Tune-Up: Instrument Check-Out

From the 1956–1960 Chevrolet Corvette Chassis Service Operations: Engines and RPO Equipment

The second half of the tune-up, done with an engine tester. Steps 18–27 calibrate the meters and then test cranking voltage, the ignition switch and resistor by-pass, and distributor resistance. They go on to dwell and dwell variation, including the 34-degree total dwell for dual-point distributors, and ignition timing and centrifugal advance, with a timing table for every 1956–60 carburetor and fuel injection engine. The last steps test secondary resistance and polarity, ignition output and charging voltage, then set idle speed and mixture for single and dual four-barrel carburetors and fuel injection.

What’s inside

Front matter

  1. Foreword and Title PageThe foreword explains why the booklet was written, how its two sections are organized and which passenger car shop manuals to use alongside it. It says the booklet covers Corvettes from 1956 on. The title page names it 1956–1960 Corvette Chassis Service Operations.pp. 1–2

Tuning the Corvette engine

  1. Tune-Up: Mechanical Checks and Adjustmentspp. 3–18
  2. Tune-Up: Instrument Check-Outpp. 19–26
  3. Additional Checks and AdjustmentsTests to use when the tune-up turns up a problem or the owner has a specific complaint. The cylinder balance test grounds pairs of cylinders by firing order and compares rpm and vacuum. The fuel pump test checks volume and pressure. The cooling system pressure test looks for internal and external leaks.pp. 27–29

Regular Production Options

  1. Heavy-Duty Brakes and Suspensionpp. 30–33
  2. Close-Ratio Transmission and Engine ConstructionThe close-ratio three-speed transmission, which starts at the foot of the previous page, with its 2.2, 1.31 and 1-to-1 ratios and clutch gear removal sequence. It is followed by how each Corvette engine differs from the passenger car V-8: chrome-plated rings, five-quart oil pan, notched or domed pistons, and the special-cam engines' bearings and balancing. Valve clearance settings continue at the top of the next page.pp. 34–34
