Fundamentals of Operation
From the 1946–1955 General Motors Hydra-Matic On-the-Car Adjustment Service Manual
How the Hydra-Matic works mechanically, as background for the adjustments. The fluid coupling replaces the clutch and drives the front, rear and reverse planetary units. Illustrations show how a planetary gearset gives reduction, reverse, direct drive and neutral, how bands and hydraulic servos hold drums, how clutch pistons lock a unit into direct drive, and the band and clutch application chart for neutral, first through fourth speed and reverse. The hydraulic system is not covered.
