Checking and Diagnosis
From the 1946–1955 General Motors Hydra-Matic On-the-Car Adjustment Service Manual
The five-step check to make before any Hydra-Matic work: engine condition and idle, fluid level on the dipstick, accelerator, throttle and selector linkage, oil pressures on a road test with gauge J 5907, and oil leakage, with a chart of leak points and causes. A coded diagnosis guide then links shift complaints, slipping, no drive and reverse faults to causes, and a noise chart identifies the pump or planetary unit at fault.
