Rear Suspension

From the 1956 Pontiac Shop Manual

The semi-floating hypoid rear axle with Hotchkiss drive, rear leaf springs, shock absorbers and propeller shaft. It lists axle ratios for Hydra-Matic and Synchro-Mesh cars and covers differential removal and major repair: pre-repair investigation, side bearing preload, backlash, pinion position and tooth contact pattern. It also covers axle shafts and bearings, rear spring bushings and liners, specifications, torques and special tools.
