Fundamental Principles of the Hydra-Matic Transmission

From the 1960 Pontiac Hydra-Matic Manual

How the transmission works. It starts with planetary gear trains, the fluid coupling and sprag clutches, then shows the front, rear and reverse units. Power flow diagrams cover neutral, each forward speed and reverse. Hydraulic sections describe the variable-capacity vane pump, governor, TV pressure, limit and coupling valves, and forced and part-throttle downshifts.
