1956 Chevrolet V8 Air Conditioning Installation Instructions
These are the 1956 Chevrolet Air Conditioning installation instructions for V8 passenger cars, issued by General Motors Parts Division in Detroit. They cover fitting the add-on refrigeration package to a car already built, and give separate steps for cars with a factory heater and cars without one.
The numbered procedure starts with preparing the car (draining the radiator, removing the hood hinge, battery, radiator core, fan, harmonic balancer and glove box) and drilling the firewall, fender skirt, radiator baffle and instrument panel from paper templates. It then covers mounting the compressor support and belt, the special fan pulley, fan blade and harmonic balancer, raising the precharged compressor, evaporator and condenser unit into place after a torch check for Freon leaks, reworking the heater blower and control head, routing the Bowden cables and idle control, and connecting the wiring harness, resistor and 20-amp fuse. Sixteen figures show part numbers and hardware, and the book ends with a performance test table of outlet air temperatures and a wiring diagram. Restorers and mechanics fitting or checking period air conditioning on a 1956 Chevrolet V8 will find the part numbers and routing useful.
