Rear End Suspension
From the 1946-1947 Pontiac Shop Manual Supplement
The 1947 rear axle with a tapered roller pinion bearing differential and new 11-tooth crowned differential pinions. Procedures cover replacing the companion flange and pinion bearing oil seal with an inch-pound torque wrench and J-2983 and J-962 tools. Also covered are tightening rear spring U-bolts and diagnosing axle noise and bearing failure. Overhaul pages explain pinion shimming and differential bearing adjustment by notches tight. Tooth contact illustrations show correct and incorrect backlash and pinion depth. Rear axle specifications list gear ratios by axle shaft color code.
