Tuning the Corvair Engine is a Chevrolet Motor Division service booklet, a complete reprint of the sound slidefilm of the same name. It was written for dealer mechanics, with a foreword recommending one copy per man and one for the service department's technical information file. The tune-up applies to the air-cooled Corvair six, with notes on 1964 models and on the 1960 and 1961 cars.
The procedure is told as a conversation between two mechanics and follows a set sequence: compression test, spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, advance and points, fuel strainers, battery, blower belt tension and belt guides, then carburetor linkage. It continues with dwell, timing, vacuum advance, carburetor vacuum balance, idle speed and mixture, fast idle cam, choke vacuum linkage, choke rods and the vapor vent check. A closing chart gives Corvair tune-up specifications for 1962 to 1964: point gap, spring tension, compression, belt tension, tappet adjustment, timing, idle rpm for Synchro-Mesh and Powerglide, and fuel pump pressure and volume. Owners and restorers can use it for a period-correct tune-up.
