5.7 Liter (350) Diesel Engine

From the 1978 Chevrolet Light Truck Service Manual

The 5.7 liter (Z) 350 four-cycle V8 diesel. The description explains how it differs from the gasoline 350: heavier block and bottom end, stainless prechamber inserts, glow plugs and spring-loaded injection nozzles, a camshaft-driven rotary injection pump on top of the engine with equal-length lines, firing order 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, and lubrication through the radiator oil cooler. On-vehicle service covers timing, linkage and vacuum regulator valve adjustment, injection pump housing pressure, pump, lines, adapter and seal, nozzles, heads, valves and lifters, oil pan and pump, front cover and timing chain. Unit repair covers crankshaft, main bearings and rear seals.
