This is Holley Carburetor Company's 1956 supplement, Form N C-228-1, to the 1955 Model 4000 service manual (Form C-228). It covers the 1956 applications of the Holley Model 4000 four-barrel downdraft carburetor on Lincoln, Mercury, Ford Thunderbird and police cars, and describes only the points where the 1956 unit differs from the 1955 one, so it is meant to be used alongside C-228.

The main change is the automatic choke, now built into the carburetor instead of mounted on the manifold, with its thermostat spring, vacuum piston, offset choke plates and fast idle cam explained in detail. Other revisions include the ball point fuel inlet needle, redesigned discharge nozzle assemblies with transfer tubes, fixed idle restrictions in place of removable idle tubes, the vacuum-operated secondary diaphragm, spark control valve and dashpot. Numbered parts lists and step-by-step changes cover disassembly and reassembly of the main body, air horn and throttle body, with Lincoln-only parts noted. Owners, restorers and carburetor rebuilders working on a 1956 Ford-family four-barrel will find it useful.
