This issue of Fisher Body Service News, Vol. 10 No. 18 (Oldsmobile Division No. 6, dated June 28, 1951), covers the new sealed-in Hydro-Lectric system used on 1951 Oldsmobile Super 88 convertibles in which only the folding top is hydraulically operated. Cars with hydraulic windows and seat kept the 1950-type system.
The bulletin explains the reversible 6-volt motor and spur gear pump assembly behind the right rear seat back, with exploded views of the reservoir, pump tubes and ball-and-spring valves; the self-centering push-pull top control switch; and the double-acting folding top lift cylinders. Step-by-step removal and installation procedures, raising, lowering and emergency manual operation are illustrated. Service sections give mechanical, electrical and hydraulic checking procedures using a light tester, a No. 8 jumper wire and a pressure gauge, with specifications of 220 to 260 psi pump pressure, 95 amps motor draw, 3.86 pints fluid capacity and Delco Super #11 hydraulic fluid. A wiring diagram closes the issue. Restorers and body mechanics use it to diagnose slow or inoperative tops.
