This Delco Brake Service Manual was published by the Moraine Products Division of General Motors in Dayton, Ohio, as Bulletin 17 D-3, dated September 1, 1949, superseding the April 1940 edition. It covers the Delco hydraulic brake controls and brake assemblies Moraine built for Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Cadillac and Chevrolet cars and Chevrolet and GMC trucks from about 1936 through 1949.
The manual explains how the compensating-type master cylinder, check valve and opposed-piston wheel cylinders work, then gives overhaul steps, repair kits, and the history of check valve and head nut styles. It covers bleeding by filler jar or pressure tank, flushing with Declene, Delco Super 9 and Super 11 brake fluids, standard tools, minor and major adjustment with eccentrics and anchor pins, special instructions for the 1949 Buick, complete brake relining, pedal clearance and parking brake cable care. A Chevrolet section covers passenger car, 1/2-, 3/4- and 1 1/2-ton and C.O.E. truck adjustment and shoe replacement, and a trouble diagnosis chart closes the book. Restorers and mechanics working on 1930s and 1940s GM hydraulic brakes will find the clearances and procedures here.
