This booklet is Number 3 in the Registered Mechanics Service Training series and covers selective fitting of the power parts in Lincoln and Mercury V-8 engines. It is written as a cartoon "show in four acts" with characters such as Piston Pete, Piston Pin Parker and Valerie Valve Stem, and was meant to accompany a dealer training chart presentation.
Act I covers pistons: the eight standard piston grades for Lincoln and Mercury with their diameters, fitting with feeler stock and a pull scale (Lincoln 6-12 lbs., Mercury 5-10 lbs.), and .020, .030 and .040 in. oversize pistons. Act II covers piston pin fits in the piston and connecting rod bushing, reaming for oversize pins, and checking rods for bend and twist. Act III covers connecting rod and main bearing fits with Plastigage, red and blue bearing halves, cap torque values and center main thrust bearing alignment with crankshaft end play. Act IV covers valve stem clearance with a dial indicator and checks of valve spring length, tension and squareness. It ends with torque wrench practice, a true-false quiz and a notice limiting service pistons to grades 2 and 6, useful to engine rebuilders.
