This 1953 Chevrolet Power Steering and Autronic Eye Repair Manual, publication S&M 49, was issued by Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors (copyright 1952) for Chevrolet service men. It covers two options new for 1953 passenger cars: the G.M. hydraulic power steering gear and the Guide Autronic Eye automatic headlamp dimmer.

The power steering half describes the recirculating ball gear (21.3 to 1 ratio), the control valve and centering plungers, the double-acting power cylinder and power rack, and the Vickers vane pump with its 750 to 900 psi relief valve. It gives the over-center and power rack adjustments, fluid level and bleeding with Type A transmission fluid, pump pressure checks with gauge J-5176, belt tension, and full overhaul of the pump, valve body, piston, ball nut and bearings, plus a trouble diagnosis chart. The Autronic Eye half explains the phototube unit, amplifier, power relay and auxiliary foot switch, then covers installation, phototube aiming, Dim and Hold sensitivity adjustment with tester J-5297, on-car tests and a wiring diagram. Restorers and mechanics can use it to rebuild or set up either option.
