Directions for Installation and Care of a Stewart Speedometer is a pocket booklet published by the Stewart-Warner Speedometer Corporation of Chicago. Its parts price list is dated January 1, 1918. It covers the Stewart speedometer sold for early automobiles, in open and flush-mount types, driven from the front road wheel through a gear, fibre pinion, swivel joint and flexible chain shaft.
The installation section explains road wheel gear sizing (twice as many teeth as the tire is inches in diameter, with a 16-tooth pinion), centering the gear with calipers, shaft routing with no bend under a seven-inch radius, and mounting the clamp on the steering arm. Troubleshooting lists cover dial vibration, incorrect speed and mileage, noisy heads, broken shaft chains and stripped swivel joints, with lubrication intervals for Stewart graphite grease. Later pages illustrate road wheel gears, swivel joints by number, shaft links, grease cup caps, pinions and steering knuckle clamp parts, followed by parts prices, labor charges and a list of service stations in the U.S., Canada and abroad. Restorers fitting or repairing a period Stewart speedometer will find the part numbers and setup figures useful.
